The belly button Hanbok, the world's most exciting.AI Staff July 15, 2020 Girl group BLACKPINK unveiled its new song "How You Like That" on NBC's "Jimmy Fallon Show.” The modernized Korean traditional dress, Hanbok, caught the eyes of viewers. The music video with BLACKPINK wearing the Hanbok garnered 170 million views. Girl group BLACKPINK (left) and member Jenny (right) who took the stage wearingHanboks made by Dan-ha. I met Dan-ha (30), the representative of Dan-ha, who achieved her dream of "Helping people around the world see her uniquely designed Hanbok." - Were you originally majoring in Hanbok? "My major was originally the Chinese language. I worked as an office worker at a casino in Jeju Island. I traveled abroad with my high school friend. Every time I went on a trip, I wore Hanbok. I like colorful patterns and I wanted to take some fun photos. My friend who is with me, Lim Woo-jung, vice president of Danha, often said, "If we have time later, let's open a brand that makes Hanbok ourselves." She continued, "I always bought and wore Hanbok, but I thought about making it myself. So I came to Seoul every weekend from 2015 and learned how to make traditional Hanbok from my master teacher at the Royal Clothing Research Institute. I once went on a trip to Paris wearing my waistcoat Hanbok. There were lots of foreigners who were interested. I've been asked many times, "What's this clothing?" "Where did you buy it?" I thought it would be marketable to sell Hanbok in Paris. Back then, there were many brands selling Hanbok. But it wasn't the design I wanted. I didn't like the fabric either. I decided to learn how to make Hanbok properly and make my own brand." - Tell us how Dan-ha was started?"I worked for a company and started an online Hanbok rental business in 2016. I did both but at some point my business income was higher than my company's salary. So I left the company and ran a Hanbok shop in Busan.””I ran a Hanbok shop and learned how to make Hanbok at the Boksik Institute. Then, I thought I want to study the theory of traditional dress. So, I went to the Graduate School of Clothing at Sungkyunkwan University in 2018. As I came to Seoul, I cleaned up the Hanbok shop. And in August, we started the Dan-ha brand and the online business. At first, I sold it by myself through Instagram. We sold 20 in the first two months. At that time, I was so amazed and proud of it. "I gradually increased the number of customers, raised funding, and grew the company.” - Tell us about Dan-ha Hanbok."The typical product is a waist skirt with patterns of royal bojagi, which recently achieved 8,000 percent of the target amount through Tumblbuck crowdfunding. The Royal Tombstone is a relic on display at the National Palace Museum. I patented the design of this cloth pattern. Dan-ha also seeks Upcycling products. Upcycling refers to the rebirth of recycled products by adding design or utilization to them. We have a lot of clothes made from yarn extracted from plastic plastic bottles." -BlackPink is the talk of the town wearing Dan-ha Hanbok."I got a call saying that they want to use Dan-ha Hanbok in a performance. We had to customize it, so it wasn't sponsored, but the stylist bought the product herself. The members Jenny and Rose wore our product. Rose's cropped top is an idea from the chest cuffs women wore in their underwear during the Joseon Dynasty, and she also has a pattern of royal cloth. The clothes that look like a black scroll are "Chullik,” a military uniform of the Joseon Dynasty. It's for men, but it's attached to a skirt, so it's often worn as a dress in everyday Hanbok. Jenny's pink jeogori was originally a long-length coat that covers her hips. She cut it in half and wore the top part like a jeogori and the bottom part like a skirt." - What is the price of this outfit?"The waist skirt costs around 200,000 won ($180.00 USD). About 450 waist skirts were sold in June. We sold it through our website. Sometimes we get pre-orders and sell it through the funding site. Tumblbug funding sales alone exceeded 400 million won ($332,000 USD) this year." -What's the difference between other modern Hanboks and Danha?"These days, Hanbok looks like Hanbok, but fabrics, patterns, and sewing methods are often Western style. In fact, it doesn't take much time and costs less. We pursue traditional sewing methods. For example, in traditional Hanbok, the part that cuts well, such as armpits and sleeves, is called a boulder, so you add another layer of cloth. These days, Hanboks skip this part a lot. But if you take out these details, it doesn't feel like traditional Hanbok. Also, we don't use fabric from the market. We pick patterns from royal relics or traditional patterns and design them ourselves." - Is there a goal ahead for you?"We are preparing collaboration to put the paintings of Minhwa artists in Hanbok. Also, I want to break the stereotype that Hanbok is only worn on special days. Many people say, "What kind of Hanbok is this?" I want people to think of Hanbok as a free and modern fashion. I think that the tradition of Hanbok can continue only when more people wear it through change. Until now, I only vaguely thought, "I wish people around the world would see my Hanbok." But I'm glad that BLACKPINK's outfits helped us let the world know about Hanbok."

[Arirang Column] 70-year history of Arirang's JulyMeeyang Ki/Arirang Society Research Director 70 years ago, the Korean War broke out. In the memory of those 3 year’s rancor is closely interwined with achievements. Not long ago, during the ceremony on the Memorial Day the rancor was being remembered. "Oh, how can we forget this day? The day that enemies intruded our Motherland. Let's stop the enemy with our bare fists and with our blood. Stamp your feet, hit the ground on this day of righteous rage." That is lightly defined. "With a strong anti-communist spirit, let's also live a good life earned with hard work. All those are various means of expressing democracy and popular sovereignity." But there are numbers to be remembered forever. 621,479 casualties, including 137,899 South Korean soldiers, 450,7422 wounded, and 32,838 missing and imprisoned. 151,129 people were killed, including 37,902 UN troops and 103,460 people were injured. The Communist Army's North Korean troops’ damage ranged from 500,000 to 520,000, missing and imprisoned from 98,000 to 120,000, Chinese Communist Army’s damage was 148,600, 798,400 wounded, missing and captive 25,600. In total, 1,778,600 people fell victims of the War, 127,600 went missing and captured. In addition, 1 million civilian South Koreans, 1.5 million North Koreans died, there were 300,000 war widows, 100,000 war orphans, 3.2 million refugees, and 10 million separated families. 10% of the total population of North and South Korea was killed. With all these numbers, Korean War is unforgettable. The aim of that war was to make the whole Korean peninsula communist. Planned by Kim Il Sung, approved by Stalin and implemented by Mao Zedong. The North Korean Communist Army's illegal invasion during the Korean War lasted for three years, causing massive economic and material damage along with millions of victims. The Korean War, which caused enormous human damage, was not only an inhumane war that destroyed the human life on large scale, but also an anti-ethnic tragedy that threatened the survival of the Korean people and destroyed the normal course of life. Thus, any endeavors of justification of the was based on the etiology or nature of the Korean War are unacceptable. This is the conclusion obtained after studying and researching for 70 years. However, there were already confirmed sentiments when personality theories were altered in the name of majority theory. Let’s look at the "Arirang History" written in the memory of that July. "Arirang July” was the time of a ceasefire talks from 1951 to 1953. The ceasefire negotiations began on July 10, 1951. An agreement on the military demarcation line and the demilitarized zone was reached, giving hope for an earlier truce. However, the talks were rescheduled and resumed due to differences in arguments and interests. The armistice negotiations lasted for two years as the United Nations’ position on the principle of repatriation by the free will of prisoners of war and the communist's position on forced repatriation were in conflict. And so, Arirang got involved. Due to the termination of the ceasefire, both sides occupied favorable positions on highlands and mobilized all kinds of weapons and strategies. Among those, the propaganda and phycological warfare were at the forefront. In the middle of the night, the sound of Arirang fired as an acoustic bomb. "-The sound of the adversary broadcasting of Arirang at Highland 854 of Jungbu Electric Wire - On the Middle Eastern Front overlooking Mt. Geumgang, the sound broadcasted by our troop information and education officer crossed the hills under the bright moonlight of the mid-autumn harvest moon and crossed the valley going straight into enemy’s territory. The realism of the sentimental "Arirang Taeryeong”, broadcasted as a first sound bomb, stirred the soul, breaking the silence of the front line. We are crying over people/ We are crying over the people of war Arirang Arirang Arariyo/ Passing the Arirang path crying The broadcasting of the Arirang encouraged defection from the enemy’s side. On average, Arirang was bringing back more than a dozen soldiers a day. In response, North Korea fired an acoustic grenade toward the south as well. It was a batte of Arirangs. This time it was ‘Paljisan Arirang’. "When you look at Namchosun, it hurts your heart. The people of North Korea are happy. The flag of the Republic of Baekdusan is waving / There are guerrilla camps Halla Mountain in Jeju Island. Look at me lady, look at me precisely/ Love me like a blooming flower in winter Ari-arirang seuri-seuri-rang Arari is here / Passing the Arirang path” It was the "Arirang bomb" during the war, Arirang's burst in anticipation of upcoming truce. It is a history written by Arirang and Arirang spirit of resistance. The two sides were enemies, but this battle of songs only became possible, because it was the same nation. Even though they were enemies, that example showed that they were all "Arirang People". Finally, on July 27, 1953, U.N. Commander Lieutenant general Mark W. Clark, commander of the Chinese People’s Volunteers Peng Dehuai and Chosun People’s Supreme Commander Kim Il-sung signed the Armistice Agreement. The signing of the ‘Agreement on the Military Armistice of Korea’ stopped the gunshots and gunfire. At the same time, it declared that a full and complete end-of-war agreement would be signed by the two Koreas. It was an Arirang performance marking a ceasefire. It was an international meeting, but there was no applause or handshake. There was not a single smile. However, the moment the UN forces went to the east gate and the North and Chinese troops to the west gate, they all played Arirang. What does it mean that both sides played Arirang at the same time? Although it was an unfinished ceasefire talk, the main subject was "Arirang People”, and the aim was to let the world know about this subject. The history of the Korean War 70 years ago and the two-year truce talk between July 10, 1951 and July 27, 1953 is written by Arirang. And the future, that will be based on that history, should be written in a spirit of coexistence and mutual prosperity of "Arirang People”. So I repeat the words, "Write history with Arirang, and write the future of Arirang with that history." English translation by Dinara Shosaidova

New Treasures and National Treasures Gathered for Public ViewingIn collaboration with the National Museum of Korea, the Cultural Heritage Administration is organizing an exhibition to be held at the National Museum from July 21 to September 27 displaying cultural artifacts that have been entered onto the list of Treasures and National Treasures over the three-year period from 2017 through 2019. The exhibition features 83 new entries composed of 196 total items, making it the largest-ever public display of Treasures and National Treasures. While 157 Treasures and National Treasures were newly designated during this period, architectural elements and other heavy or immovable properties had to be excluded. Thirty-four individual and institutional heritage ownerscooperated bylendingtheir precious collections to the exhibition, allowing the creation of this magnificent opportunity to appreciate such a vast range of Treasures and National Treasures within a single space. The exhibition consists of three sections organized according to distinctive themes―Preserving History, ArtisticExpression, and Opening the Heart. The first part (Preserving History) presents an array of documentary heritage items testifying to the history of Korea. Among them areprecious documents such as Samguksagi (History of the Three Kingdoms; National Treasure No. 322-1; collected at the Oksan Neo-Confucian Academy), Samgukyusa(Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms; National Treasure No. 306-3; collected at Yonsei University), and Joseon wangjosillok(The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty; National Treasure No. 151; collected at the National Palace Museum, National Museum, Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, Academy of Korean Studies). History of the Three Kingdoms and Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms were promoted from Treasure to National Treasurestatus, and more volumes were added to the existing assemblage of books collectively designated as TheAnnals of the Joseon Dynasty. The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, consisting of thousands of volumes,is detailed record of the 472 years of history from the reign of Joseon's founder (King Taejo) to its 25th ruler (King Cheoljong). The story of this invaluable documentary heritage is also presented at the exhibition, detailing the process of its publication, historical management, and its distribution. Also included are examples of the diversity of Korean's documentation culture, such as Volumes 6?11 of Songjopyojeonchongnyu(Collection of Letters and Appeals to the Emperors of the Song Dynasty; Treasure No. 1989; private ownership), which offers evidence of the advanced printing technology of Joseon; Gisa gyecheop(Album of Paintings of the Gathering of the Elderly; National Treasure No. 325; National Museum), an illustrated record of a royal event demonstrating how the Joseon court actively employed painting as a means of record-keeping; andPortrait of Choi Seok-jeong and its case (Treasure No. 1936; Cheongju National Museum), showing a realistic depiction of a Joseon scholar. The second part (Artistic Expression) offers a diverse range of artifacts displaying traditional Korean aesthetics. Exhibits include celadon pieces testifying to the era’s lofty pottery skillsand the traditional focus on unpretentious beauty. The celadon jar with the inscription of the fourth Sunhwa year (National Treasure No. 326; EhwaWomans University) exemplifies early-Goryeo celadon production. The celadon brush holder with openwork lotus and scroll design (Treasure No. 1932; National Museum of Korea) is one of the best examples of figurative ceramic wares from the Goryeo period. The exhibition also features a selection of real-view landscapes and genre paintings from Joseon, offering a vivid view of the culture and nature of the time. A Comprehensive View of the Inner Side of Mt. Geumgangsan in Autumn (Treasure No. 1951; Kansong Art Museum) by JeongSeon, Korea’s foremost real-view landscape painter, presents a poetic version of the Korean landscape. Kim Deuk Sin's album of genre paintings delivers images of the everyday lives of the people of Joseon(Treasure No. 1987; Kansong Art Museum). Also included is Streams and Mountains without End (Treasure No. 2029; National Museum of Korea) by Yi In-mun, a stunning 8.5-meter-long depiction of the ideal world of which Joseon-era people dreamed. Kim Jeong-hui's album of orchid paintings and calligraphic works (Treasure No. 1983; Kansong Art Museum) provides a superb manifestation of the integration of scholarly and artistic pursuits. The 22 Treasures collected at the Kansong Art Museum that are displayed at this exhibitiondeserve special attention. They include Beauty by Sin Yun-bok (Treasure No. 1973), a delicate depiction of a beautiful woman of its time, and Mounted Scholar Listening to a Nightingale by Kim Hong-do (Treasure No. 1970), an eloquent demonstration of the painter's artistic genius. This is the first time such a large collection of pieces has been lent out by the KansongArt Museum, a private organization established by the art collector Jeon Hyeong-pil while he was exhaustinghis personal fortune safeguarding Korean cultural heritage during the perilous era of Japanese colonial rule. (The paintings and calligraphic works from the Kansong Art Museum are being rotated every three weeks, so it is suggested that visitors monitor which items are on display.)The third section (Opening the Heart) provides a space to explore artifacts related to Buddhism, which account for more than a half of the entire body of Treasures and National Treasures. As a time-honored religion in Korea,Buddhismlong served as the foremost spiritual support forsociety. It has not only helped Koreans overcome their everyday troubles, but also left behind a rich repertoire of artistic creativity. Many Koreans of the past wished to surmount the difficulty ofthis current life and be reborn in the Buddha’s paradise. To help convey their heartfelt wishes, they erected pagodas, constructed dharma halls, produced Buddhist statues and paintings, published Buddhist scriptures, and crafted decorative reliquaries. The reliquaries excavated from the site of Wangheungsa Temple in Buyeo (National Treasure No. 327; Buyeo National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage) is the oldest such example surviving in Korea, demonstrating the pinnacle of the crafting skills of theBaekje Kingdom. Also covered in the third part of the exhibition are Seollimbohun(Teachings of Zen Buddhism; Treasure No. 700-2; Chungju Museum); Sanggyojeongbonjabidoryangchambeop(The Revised Version of the Repentance Ritual of the Create Compassion; National Treasure No. Treasure No. 875-3; Dalmasa Temple); Worincheongangjigok(Songs of the Moon's Reflection on a Thousand Rivers; private ownership), a Buddhist hymn composed by King Sejong on the heavenly bliss to be experienced by his dead wife, Queen Sohyeon, in the nether land; and the woodblocks used to print the Lotus Sutra (Treasure No. 1961; Gaesimsa Temple). These Buddhist publications attest to the documentation culture manifested within Korean Buddhism. Buddhist paintings and sculptures are part of the exhibition as well, includingPainting of the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion with a Thousand Arms (Treasure No. 2015; private ownership) and the wooden seated Bodhisattva of Great Compassion of Buramsa Temple in Namyangju (Treasure No. 2003; Buramsa Temple). For the exhibition, nine Buddhist temples affiliated with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism offered artifacts from their collections. Before viewing the items themselves, visitors are invited to watch a video clip featuring short interviews on such questions as what is the first word that comes to mind when thinking about Treasures and National Treasures or about personal ideas on the future of cultural heritage. Along with ordinary citizens, participants in the interviews include former Minister of Culture Lee Eo-ryeong, Professor Sin Byeong-ju at Konkuk University, and the actor Lee Sun-jae. The video interviews will help prepare visitors for the upcoming exhibition by encouraging them to contemplatethe significance and meaning of cultural heritage. A range of experience programs are on offer as well, such as the digital search screen installed in the hall housing the first part of the exhibition. Here, visitors can explore the contents of The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty accord to the themes that interest them. When the search information times out, the letters vanish as if washed away with water. This digital effect is intended to evoke the "draft cleaning" process. During the Joseon Dynasty, the drafts that were produced for publication ofThe Annals of the Joseon Dynasty for a particular king were all washed clean with water in order to erase what had been written in ink. This process of erasing drafts was intended to preempt any possible problems that might arise in the future because of the draft records. For the second part of the exhibition, the walls of a separate exhibition hall displaying Yi In-mun'sStreams and Mountains without End and Sim Sa-jeong'sAround Shu (Treasure No. 1986; Kansong Art Museum) show a 30-meter-long scanned image from Streams and Mountains without End. The 4.6 billionpixel image allows an ideal environment for the appreciation of the scenes. Clear sounds of nature created by the sound artist Kim Jun are emitted on 15 channels tocreate a strong sense of atmosphere as well. The space for the third part of the exhibition uses digital images to present Buddhist temples, pavilions, large Buddhist hanging scrolls, and other immovable or heavy artifacts that have been newly designated but could not be physically brought to the exhibition for practical reasons. As part of the social distancing measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, an online reservation system is being applied for the exhibition: The number of visitors is limited to 200 every two hours during the opening hours of the museum (from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).The exhibition can also be enjoyed online by those who cannot make it in person to the museum or as an alternative if the museum must be closed due to developments in theCOVID-19 situation. Online exhibitions organized according to various themes are beinguploaded to the official webpage of the National Museum and on its social media. Thirty exhibits selected by the Cultural Heritage Administration are beingmade public through the online gallery of the Korean search engine Daum (http://gallery.v.daum.net). Also found online are video clips in which the heads of the Cultural Heritage Administration and National Museum of Korea (respectively Administrator Chung Jae-suk and Director General Bae Ki-dong) provide information on the exhibition and artifacts beingdisplayed. Online lectures on Treasures and National Treasures are being planned (three times, respectively on July 29, August 5, and August 13). The lectures will be aired live on the National Museum's YouTube channelso that people can ask questions and engage in real-time discussions with the lecturer. In addition, an online recreation challenge is held. People are invited to select 10 out of the 83 artifacts displayed at the exhibition and reproduce them in their own way. Three winners of a small gift are chosen every Monday. This exhibition is jointly organized by the two leading heritage authorities of Korea―the Cultural Heritage Administration and the National Museum of Korea―for the purpose of expanding the public opportunities to appreciate Treasures and National Treasures as the foremost material evidence of the essence of the nation's artistic, aesthetic, and cultural achievements. Held three years after the 2017 exhibition displaying new Treasures and National Treasures designated from 2014?2016, this exhibition is expected to provide an idealoccasion for people to ponder the significance and meaning of cultural heritage in Korea. It is hoped that a viewing of these Treasures and National Treasures will offer comfort to people during these difficult times ofthe COVID-19 outbreak. * The exhibition period is subject to change depending on the COVID-19 situation. Before visiting, please refer to the webpage of the National Museum (www.museum.go.kr).

Intruduction of the "Coronavirus Arirang", manifestation of the universal value and international acknowledgement.Intruduction of the "Coronavirus Arirang", manifestation of the universal value and international acknowledgement. "With an unfamiliar word Coronavirus/ The world is going through a lot of struggle There is no cure or preventive medicine/ I wish I could come up with it Be careful not to get infected/ We can fight it, don't be scared Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo/ Pass by me through the path of Arirang" These are the first 3 out of 6 verses. The world is already terrified enough and there is no cure or vaccine yet, but the verse contains a reference to "medicine business" put in a joking manner in Gyeongsang-do dialect, that in order to put one's mind at ease, more and more drugs are being sold. "Keep the social distancing and wear masks/ Wash your hands well for prevention Disinfect the surroundings and maintain coughing etiquette/ Let's lead a healthy lifestyle Hang in everyone, hang in everyone, let's beat the Coronavirus/ There is a big distance between us, but our hearts are close.” The pharmaceutical companies might try to keep us in the dark, but the preventive measures are the ones known from long before. But isn't it a paradox that lies in the "core of universality"? I know it, and you know it, that's why you and I must keep in mind what are supposed to know - that's what the "Arirang - the song that precedes people" is about. To put it in academic terms, it is called ‘Arirang Versification Method’. (Professor Kang Teung-hak of Kangreung National University) Here the success of Na Woon-gyu's movie "Arirang" is explained with the following logic: "if you put the main topic ahead, it's not a poem or a song." Simply put, "If you leave me and go, your feet will get sore" – a theme song could have preceded the movie itself. (Ki Mi-yang, Secretary General of the Arirang Association) According to this logic, "Coronavirus Arirang” is a song aimed to convey the main passage and main measures. "There is a big distance between us, but our hearts are close." In fact, if the hearts want to be close to each other, wouldn't mutual attraction be stronger if they are physically further apart? Isn't it natural that wearing masks, washing hands, maintaining coughing etiquette increases mutual attraction, magnetic magnetism and respect? In this regard, this song has a chance to become "a song that precedes people." # When among the press release materials we saw phrases like "purely private organizations”, "despite the drizzling rain” and when we saw the attached pictures, suddenly we had a strong desire to write a sentimental note rather than an article. We weren't asked to write a report, but we were told, "Please, take a look at the materials and if you feel like this topic is close to you, spread the word about it". "Coronavirus Arirang" was first presented on 14th July at the outdoor concert platform of the Mungyeong city Jungang Park by the Arirang City Mungyeong Citizens Committee (Chairman Lee Man-yu). Chairman Lee expressed his deep pride by saying that, "It is for the first time that we present the Coronavirus Arirang nationwide as a result of careful planning and promotion. It is a meaningful work of Mungyeong, the city of Arirang, on its own that will be spread to the whole world." "Coronavirus Arirang" appeared 90 years after the "Vaccination Arirang" (Vaccination Propaganda), a song sung to motivate the vaccination against smallpox in the 1930. "Coronavirus Arirang" reflects the issues of its epoch and we have no doubt that it will become a true masterpiece," - he added. About 50 people participated at the presentation during the rainy day: Vice-Chairman of the Mungyeong City Council Lee Jeong-gil, Operation Director Seo Jeong-shik, Chairman of the Gugok Wonlim Preservation Society Kim Dong-ik, local history students and Arirang researchers. Vice-Chairman Lee Jeong-gil mentioned in his congratulatory remark, "We were hoping for the COVID-19 to subside during the hot summer weather, but now we are expecting the second outbreak coming this fall." # The lyrics reflecting the current state of events were written by Lee Man-yoo, put on the basic melody of Menaritori Mungyeong Arari and arranged in a fast and cheerful manner so that students and young people could also enjoy singing it. (Korean traditional music specialist Ham Soo-ho). Apart from the Secretary General Park Soon-ja, the song was sung by 10 members of the Arirang City Mungyeong Citizens Committee's choir and Hanguri Gugak Orchestra. It was presented after a 10-day practice. It is necessary to make the song spread and get known, as well as to add masculine parts to the choir and accompanying instruments. First of all, the song should become viral via YouTube. Naturally, cooperation with local governments and institutional organizations is required, and in particular, it is necessary to cooperate with education officials such as the Education Office, so that students can start performing it as soon as possible.
